Beautiful job contrasting the nuances between mindsets and mental states. We need more examples of these subtle forms of thinking that provide us guardrails to keep us on healthy, focused, productive paths.

I appreciate you.

As a psych major, I could talk about this stuff all day! A wonderful and insightful article. Makes me think of the Wayne Dyer quote "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." Also reminded me of the Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton. Such fascinating stuff!

In your article you said “Our beliefs and assumptions are ultimately choices. Our resulting states are not.”

I’ve never quite thought of mental states as a result…I kinda just thought my mental state was a choice…interesting, you’ve inspired to give this deeper thought.

Thank you.

Appreciate you brother.

I agree with you that sometimes mental states are a choice. On those hard days where nothing is going your way, you just received bad news, or you’re already emotional for whatever reason, i find it impossible to just chose a different state. I can, however, influence it with mindset shifts to reset thinking patterns leading to an improved state eventually.

Mindset is a truly powerful thing. I believe that part of my issues with burnout in the past were due to mindset (of course there were many factors, but mindset does make a difference). Thanks for this great article!

Thank you Kendra!

Working in healthcare myself (and teaching resilience to the military and healthcare workers), the daily toll of the job for people who care increases risk of burnout. I love to talk about the difference between rational empathy, attempting to see our patients’ perspective without taking on their emotions, and emotional empathy or sympathy. I strongly believe emotional tolls further increase likelihood of burnout for that reason.

This really does become a mindset! How can I continue to help without hurting myself?

Thanks again

I wish I had your teachings available to me when I was going through burnout; it would have been life-changing. I'm glad you mentioned empathy because I am writing about that now as one of the factors that contributed to my decline. Thank you for what you are doing to help others!

Really appreciate that! I’m deeply grateful for the RNs and similar helping fields of the world. Our health and compassion stems from souls like yours. Love that you’re taking your experience and growth from it to transcend to others on top of what you already do professionally.

Looking forward to your post on empathy!

Great article, Kyle. Having the right Mindset makes or breaks you, especially when you’re trying to expand your comfort zone. Which is often for me. Choosing the right one has become my daily practice.

Thank you Marisa!

That’s the goal, expanding that comfort zone.

Intentional mindsets prior to challenge to influence mental states.
